I love this window into your childhood memories, and learning a little more about a grandfather I barely knew. I wish he had tried harder to be a part of our lives, especially for your sake, but I'm proud of you for focusing on your beautiful memories and finding forgiveness in your heart for what could have been.
Young people have no idea when they think "39" is "old". However, I feel I wasn't yet an adult until I was 44. But, I got married when I was 21 and thought I was an adult. It's all in how you travel your own road, I guess.
He had his own new family and I respected that. He was a very beautiful and sensitive man.

Your Dad sounds like he was a special combination of smart, and full of personality. It's no wonder you have such good memories after all these years.
This was a beautifully written story with so many details still vivid in your memory.
I think my Dad would have gotten along great with your Dad. We lost him in 2007 as well, but he was 73. Lung cancer got him.
I often tell people on my birthday that I'm 39 again, or 39 for the x amount of time.
Young people have no idea.
Thanks for sharing some memories of your Dad.
